Burns

• Authorization will be arranged by the rooms or hospital staff.

• Fasting:

• No solid food for 6 hours before surgery

• No clear liquids for 2 hours before surgery

• Most chronic medications may be taken, except diabetic medication (to be discussed with your doctor).

• Inform your doctor if you are taking blood-thinning medication.

Burn procedures are performed under local, regional, or general anaesthesia, depending on burn severity. After wound cleaning or surgery, appropriate dressings are applied, and post-operative care instructions are provided.

The management of burns depends on the depth, size, and location of the injury.

• Superficial burns are usually managed conservatively with dressings and wound care.

• Deeper or infected burns may require surgical debridement (removal of dead tissue).

• Burn wounds are cleaned thoroughly to reduce infection risk.

• Specialized dressings are applied to promote healing.

• In some cases, skin grafting may be required once the wound is clean and healthy.

Surgical treatment typically takes 30–90 minutes, depending on the extent of the burn and the procedure required.

• Bleeding

• Infection or delayed wound healing

• Scarring or contractures

• Need for repeat procedures or skin grafting

• Unintended damage to surrounding structures

• Fluid loss and electrolyte imbalance in more extensive burns

• Rarely, severe infection or sepsis requiring intensive care

• Complications are uncommon with appropriate care. Contact the rooms urgently if there is increasing pain, redness, swelling, discharge, fever, or worsening of the wound.

Hospital stay varies depending on burn severity:

• Minor burns may be treated as day cases

• More extensive burns may require several days of admission for monitoring and wound care

• Burns are debrided and dressed 1-2 times a week until healed
