Colostomy / Ileostomy creation or reversal

A colostomy or ileostomy is a surgical opening, called a stoma, created on the abdominal wall to divert stool into a stoma bag.

A colostomy is created from the large bowel, and an ileostomy is created from the small bowel. A stoma may be temporary or permanent.

A reversal is surgery to close a temporary stoma and reconnect the bowel so that stool can pass through the rectum again.

What to expect

Discharge Instructions

  • Keep the wound clean and dry. Take prescribed pain medication, antibiotics, laxatives, or anti-diarrhoeal medication as instructed.

  • If you have a stoma, you will receive stoma care instructions before discharge. Monitor for high stoma output, dehydration, skin irritation, fever, vomiting, increasing pain, wound redness, or discharge.

Return to Activities

  • Light walking is encouraged. Avoid heavy lifting, abdominal strain, and strenuous activity for 4–6 weeks. Avoid driving until you are comfortable, mobile, and no longer using strong pain medication
