Fibroadenoma

• Authorization will be arranged by the rooms or hospital staff.

• Fasting:

• No solid food for 6 hours before surgery

• No clear liquids for 2 hours before surgery

• Most chronic medications may be taken, except diabetic medication (to be discussed with your doctor).

• Inform your doctor if you are taking blood-thinning medication.

​The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia. A small incision is made over or near the lump to remove it. Dressings are applied, and post-operative instructions are provided.

Management depends on the size of the fibroadenoma, symptoms, patient preference, and investigation findings.

• Many fibroadenomas can be safely monitored with imaging and clinical follow-up.

• Imaging such as ultrasound and/or mammography is usually performed.

• A core needle biopsy may be required to confirm the diagnosis.

• Surgical removal (excision biopsy) is recommended if the lump is enlarging, painful, cosmetically concerning, or if there is diagnostic uncertainty.

• The removed tissue is sent for histological analysis.

Surgical excision usually takes 30–60 minutes.

• Bleeding

• Infection

• Bruising or haematoma

• Scarring or cosmetic breast changes

• Altered nipple or breast sensation

• Recurrence or development of new fibroadenomas

• Unintended damage to surrounding structures

• Complications are uncommon. Contact the rooms promptly if you experience increasing pain, swelling, redness, discharge, or fever.

This is usually a day procedure, and patients are discharged on the same day.
