Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) tube

A Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) tube is a feeding tube placed directly into the stomach through the abdominal wall. It is used when a patient is unable to eat or drink safely by mouth for a prolonged period but has a functioning stomach and intestines. PEG tubes provide long-term nutritional support, hydration, and medication delivery.

Common indications include neurological conditions, stroke, head and neck cancers, swallowing disorders, and severe malnutrition.

What to expect

Discharge Instructions

  • Keep the PEG site clean and dry.

  • Follow feeding and flushing instructions carefully.

  • Rotate the tube daily once advised to prevent skin breakdown.

  • Do not pull or twist the tube unnecessarily.

  • Take prescribed medications as directed.

  • Monitor for signs of infection or leakage

Return to Activities

  • Gentle activity may resume within 24–48 hours.

  • Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity until cleared by your doctor.

  • Normal daily activities can usually continue once discomfort settles.
