Inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, is a chronic condition where the digestive tract becomes inflamed. The two main types are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Symptoms may include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, blood in the stool, weight loss, tiredness, fever, poor appetite, and recurrent flare-ups

What to expect

Discharge Instructions

  • Hospital stay is usually 5–10 days, depending on the type of surgery, bowel function recovery, wound healing, and whether complications occur.

Return to Activities

  • For colonoscopy: Normal activities can usually resume the following day.  Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after sedation.

  • After surgery: Light walking is encouraged. Avoid heavy lifting, abdominal straining, and strenuous activity for 4–6 weeks.

Ask for a referral by your GP (usually required by medical aids)
